Gordon Shaw Collaborations
My very good friend Gordon died recently. He was pretty amazing.
I’d known him since Primary School. He had a brain tumour and made comics and illustrations that dealt with his diagnosis.
We did some daft performances together, made a couple of prints and he designed a few posters for events I put on, but the work we did together that I’m most proud of was the wee exhibitions we put on of his graphic work.
We had plans for several more.
There’s an excellent documentary film about him, Long Live My Happy Head.
It’s worth a watch.
Bittersweet Graphic Novel Launch Party Print display - Sofi’s, Leith, 2019.
MRI Soundsystem Feasibility Study - Dumfries, 2019
We had a plan, which I still hope to realise, to make a sculptural representation of an MRI machine, based on Gordon’s drawings, that will also be a playable instrument and performance device. The idea being that engagement with this replica may help people deal with the anxiety relating to the procedure by giving them control of the sounds it makes, using a bank of MRI sound recordings as source material to create sound pieces and music that can be played through the machine.
We made a draft 3D sketch of the soundsystem and presented it, in Out of the Blue in Leith, alongside a display of Gordon’s illustrations of carers, a series of work based on interviews with people who had cared for someone with terminal cancer.
Make it stand out.

Dream it.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
